The Kanda Matsuri Festival

View Japan on WayWayFar's travel map.

We discovered that we are in Tokyo for the Kanda Matsuri, a festival that occurs on the weekend closest to May 15 on years that end in an odd number. (Of course we went)

On Saturday there is a day-long procession through central Tokyo. On Sunday, (the part we attended) portable shrines (mikoshi) are paraded, with much gusto, by various neighbourhood groups.

The Kanda Matsuri is the festival of the Kanda Myojin Shrine. It started during the Edo Period (1603-1867) and over the years has come to celebrate wealth and good fortune for the people.
